New Employee Training

When paramedics begin their career with Henderson County EMS, they undergo a thorough training process to ensure that they are prepared to effectively operate within our EMS system.  A new employee’s training process is tailored to his or her specific needs.  If you are a new paramedic, our training staff will help you master the prehospital practice of medicine and grow in your career.  For experienced paramedics, we will help you learn the specifics of the Henderson County EMS system so that you can apply your clinical and operational experience to the care of patients in Henderson County.

Didactic Training

First, new paramedics and AEMTs spend several days with our training staff in a classroom setting.  New employees will be introduced to HCEMS operational guidelines, clinical protocols, equipment and other relevant information so they will be prepared to begin working in the field.

Field Training

Once a paramedic or AEMT begins practicing in the field, they will be paired with a field training officer (FTO) or field training specialist (FTS). Their assigned FTO or FTS will assist them with a variety of learning objectives.  The field trainer will also monitor their performance and be available as a resource to ensure that they provide care that is within the standards of our EMS system.  In order to successfully complete field training, a paramedic or AEMT will need to demonstrate their ability to practice independently through their performance on EMS calls and successful completion of oral board scenarios with our system medical director.
