Henderson County's state-of-the-art Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department is led by Terry Layne. EMS is committed to excellence and is a progressive leader in emergency medical services. It is also a professional organization, stressing integrity and independent judgment. Almost all of the emergency medical personnel are Paramedic-level certified, a much higher precentage than many other EMS departments in the region. Not only do EMS personnel provide ambulance coverage, but they are also involved in the community. Staff members provide CPR and First Aid Training to citizens through Blue Ridge Community College, and other educational services to county employees, day care centers, industries, and other interested groups.

Essential Departmental Functions: EMS provides ambulance coverage and emergency medical care to the citizens of Henderson County around the clock, with four Advanced Life Support Paramedic ambulances. The EMS Staff responds to approximately 8,500 emergency calls per year from three stations in the county: the Main Station next to Pardee Hospital in downtown Hendersonville, Station #2 on Highway 280 near the Hwy 191 split, and Station #3 on Upward Road near the I-26 intersection. Private ambulance services also are available for non-ambulatory patients who do not need emergency care.

Types of Emergency Calls: Approximately 58% of the emergency-related calls involve falls, strokes, seizures, diabetes, choking, asthma attacks, altered levels of consciousness, accidental overdoses, etc. Ten percent of the emergency calls involve cardiac patients. Eight percent of all calls are motor vehichle accidents. Twenty-four percent of the calls were of a general or non-emergency illness. Patients 65 years or older generate more than 60% of the total EMS calls, with children 12 years and younger generating less than 3% overall.
