What is the Mills River Watershed Protection Project?

The Mills River Watershed Protection Project has one basic goal:  to improve the water quality in Mills River in a way that also benefits landowners.  The Mills River Partnership is a non-regulatory organization devoted to working with landowners in the Mills River Watershed.   Each project is designed with the individual needs of the landowner in mind.  All projects are voluntary and are paid for through grants awarded to the Mills River Project.

  What is a watershed?

A watershed (or drainage basin) is the area of land that catches rain and snow and drains or seeps into a given stream, lake, river, or marsh.

Where is the Mills River Watershed?

The Mills River Watershed is located in the mountains of Western North Carolina, mainly in Henderson County.  The Watershed extends from Mt. Pisgah in the West, through Pisgah National Forest, and all the way to the confluence of the Mills River with the French Broad River in the East. In the Pisgah National Forest there are two WS I areas above two City of Hendersonville intakes. West of 280 to the WS I areas, the Mills River watershed is Water Supply Class II. From 280 to the French Broad River the watershed is Water Supply Class III. The French Broad River is classified as WS IV for five miles upstream of the Mills River.
