Be Active Day Is for All Ages

January 17, 2014

The 6th Annual “Be Active Day” will be held Saturday, January 25, from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., at center court at the Blue Ridge Mall. Sponsored by the Department of Public Health, the free event features activities, demonstrations and performances to inspire all ages—kids and adults—to find a new way to move more and be active.

“Be Active Day is about promoting physical activity as something fun and enjoyable,” said Terri Arrington, Health Educator at the Henderson County Department of Public Health. “Movement and play are ways people of all ages can be healthier, and this is especially important for addressing obesity. We hope folks will take advantage of this opportunity and come out on a cold January day to learn more and to have some fun! ”

In North Carolina, two-thirds of adults and nearly one-third of children ages 10-17 are either overweight or obese. The consequences of obesity include increased risk for chronic disease such as diabetes and hypertension. Additionally, youth who are overweight or obese are at risk of remaining overweight as adults and developing chronic disease at an early age.

Performers this year are Forge Mountain Cloggers, Twisty Sisters and Southern Lights Square Dance. Other participants are Henderson County Parks and Recreation, Airborne Gymnastics, Break Out, Park Ridge Health, Fitness Masters of WNC, SonRise Fitness and Henderson County Department of Public Health.
