The Department of Public Health and all county offices will be closed Monday and Tuesday, December 24-25.

The Immunization Clinic will be closed during the following time periods in December for staff training and other activities:
Thursday, Dec 6: Closed 12:30 - 2 PM
Wednesday, Dec 12: Closed 11:30 - 2:00 PM
Tuesday, Dec 18: Closed 8:00 - 2:00 PM
Closed on Monday, 12/24, and Tuesday, 12/25.

The clinic will be open during regular hours all other business days during December.

Foreign Travel immunization services available by appointment only.

The Department of Public Health offers immunizations for children and adults. Travel immunizations are also provided for those wishing to travel out of the United States. Immunization schedule and recommendations vary depending on age and need. For information about immunizations, you may contact Linda Weldon at 692-4223.

Child Immunizations

Immunizations are provided at no cost for all required childhood immunizations. "Shot" records are maintained and may be requested at any time during normal business hours. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that all children be immunized against life threatening diseases. As of July 1, 2000, the recommended child immunization schedule is:

Public School Requirements

Primary Schools
Before a child can enter into the Henderson County Public School system, they must have all immunizations as recommended by NC Department of Institution, NC Dept. of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control. Please refer to the above childhood immunization schedule.

College Entrance
Many higher education entrance policies requires students to update their vaccines. Please check with your college or university regarding their requirements.

Adult Immunizations

You are never too old to get shots. The Department of Public Health offers immunizations for adults. The following are recommendations by CDC and your local health department. Fees may apply with some of the vaccinations. A $ denotes when fees apply. Please check with the department for exact cost.

Influenza
"flu shot"

Free for Medicare Part B
$ for all others

The "flu shot" is recommended every fall for people age 65 and older; women who will be in their 2nd or 3rd trimester of pregnancy during flu season; residents of long-term care facilities; people younger than 65 who have chronic medical problems and for those who work with or live with any of these individuals.

Pneumococcal
"pneumonia shot"

Free for Medicare Part B
$ for all others

The pneumonia shot is recommended one time at age 65 (or older if it was not given at 65). This shot is also recommended for people younger than 65 who have certain chronic illnesses. Some individuals with particular health risks will need a one-time revaccination dose 5 years later. Consult your doctor.
Tetnus, diphtheria (Td) Every 10 years if you have completed the 3 basic tetanus-diphtheria shots in your lifetime. If not, that series needs to be completed first.

TB Skin Test

$ or Medicare

This is not a vaccination but a screening for Tuberculosis. It is recommended for those working in the food service, health and emergency care. This test should be done yearly.

Hepatitis A & B

$ depending on age

Recommended for those at risk including travelers to certain areas outside the US Consult your health care professional to determine your level of risk and need for this vaccine.
Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) One dose is recommended for those born in 1957 or later if that person has not been previously vaccinated. (A second dose of MMR may be required in some work or school settings, or recommended for international travel.) People born before 1957 are usually considered immune.

Varicella

$ >19 years

Recommended for those who have never had chickenpox. You may want to consult with your health care provider.

Foreign Travel Immunizations

People wanting to travel abroad can obtain travel immunizations by appointment at the health department. As soon as travel plans are confirmed, contact the health department to make sure vaccine is on-site and that your inoculation will cover the entire travel time.

Appointments are required. Travel immunization fees vary according to type of vaccines. Call 692-4223 for more information.
