Dental Tips
Henderson County Department of Public Health
Hendersonville, North Carolina

  • Brush your teeth at least two times each day, preferably in the morning and before bedtime.
  • Floss your teeth one time each day, preferably at night.
  • Use an ADA fluoridated toothpaste.
  • Children under age three don't need to use toothpaste. If desired, however, use only a smear of toothpaste.
  • Use a soft-bristled brush. Change your toothbrush frequently--every three to four months or sooner if you have had an illness such as strep throat.
  • Visit your dentist two times each year.
  • Limit your sweet snacks.
  • To avoid early childhood caries or Nursing Bottle Syndrome, never put your baby to bed with a bottle. Also, never let your baby toddle around with a bottle.
  • If your child needs a bottle at bedtime or for long periods of time during the day, fill the bottle with plain water only.
  • Children should have their first dental visit by age one.
  • If you use tobacco products, consider quitting to prevent all forms of cancer and also tooth decay and gum disease.
