Appointments: Open Access
The Department of Public Health offers Open Access Appointment Scheduling. In most cases, patients call and are scheduled the same day. In the event that all appointments are taken by the time you call, you may be asked to call the next day for an appointment. If the reason is urgent, you may ask to speak to the triage nurse and be worked in for a same day appointment. Some appointments, such as prenatal care or follow-up for a specific condition, are still prescheduled. For special circumstances, such as transportation issues, you may request a prescheduled appointment. Be sure to tell the appointment clerk if you have any special circumstances.

Pregnancy testing is free and available
on the following schedule:

Maternity Clinic
The Department of Public Health offers obstetric care for pregnant women who are residents of Henderson County. The department accepts Medicaid, some private insurance, and self-pay clients on an income-based sliding scale. Patients are seen by appointment. Maternity services include, but are not limited to:

Women may deliver at the hospital of their choice: Pardee Hospital or Park Ridge Hospital. Care is transferred in the last month to the provider who will deliver the baby. Women who are interested in a vaginal delivery after a c-section are transferred to MAHEC for care in the last month and to Mission Hospital. Some high-risk conditions of pregnancy are cared for in the clinic; others will be transferred to an appropriate maternity provider.

Family Planning Clinic
Family planning services are confidential and provided to everyone who desires assistance with postponing or planning pregnancy. Women of any age can provide their own consent for family planning services. Medicaid and some private insurance policies are accepted. Charges for a woman under nineteen years old who is unmarried are based on her income only. Men are also eligible to receive family planning services, including vasectomy. Information and applications are available to men and women eligible for the Family Planning Waiver Medicaid. This program will pay for family planning services, prescriptions, and an annual exam.

Additional methods may be prescribed or recommended but are not currently available on our formulary. These options include:

Emergency Contraception
Emergency contraception is most effective if given within 24 hours, but it can be given up to 5 days (120 hours) after unprotected sex. Should you have unprotected sex or should your birth control method fail, and you would like emergency contraception, please call the health department as soon as possible at 692-4223 and ask for the earliest possible appointment for emergency contraception.

Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Services
The Department of Public Health clinic offers a screening program for breast and cervical cancer for women ages 40 - 64 years with little or no insurance. Some women ages 18 to 39 may also be eligible. The program includes clinical breast exams, mammograms, and Pap smears as well as referals for follow-up. Call 694-6010 and ask for an appointment.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases and HIV
The clinic offers confidential testing, treatment, and advice to anyone who is concerned about the possibility of exposure to HIV or a sexually transmitted disease. Patients receive counseling, treatment options, and prevention methods. There is no charge for this service and some treatments are available free of charge. Child Health Services

The Department of Public Health offers comprehensive medical services for children, from newborn up to 21 years of age. We accept Medicaid, Health Choice, some private insurance, and self-pay clients on an income-based sliding scale. We provide on-site eligibility services for Medicaid and Health Choice. Patients are seen by Open Access appointment, usually on the same day. Children who are sick can be seen the same day.

Child Health Clinic
Child Health screening and medical services are available to children in Henderson County. We provide coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through a contract with physicians at Hendersonville Family Health Center. If you need to contact a physican when the clinic is closed, call 692-4223 and follow the after-hours instructions or call Pardee Hospital at 696-1000 and ask for the doctor on call for the health department. Services include, but are not limited to:

  • Well child history and physicals
  • Sick child care
  • Kindergarten and sports physicals
  • Immunizations
  • Developmental screenings
  • WIC and nutrition services
  • Kid Fit (a child obesity prevention program)
  • Screening for Sickle Cell Anemia
  • Lead screenings
  • Other lab services
  • ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) Clinic that consists of a multidisciplinary team of medical provider, psychologist, clinical social worker, and school nurse who offer evaluation and treatment for ADHD
  • Behavioral health counseling
  • Referrals to Child Service Coordination

Reach Out and Read®
The Henderson County Department of Public Health is a participant of the Reach Out and Read® childhood literacy program. The program, which is offered at over 2,500 sites across the nation, was created to make early literacy a standard part of pediatric primary care. At each well-child visit from, from six months through five years of age, providers give parents an age-appropriate book and guidance on the importance of reading aloud to their child and ways to make reading fun to children of all ages.

Fluoride Varnish Program
Eligible children, from six months through 41 months of age, can participate in the Fluoride Varnish Program. This program is part of Smart Start of Henderson County Partnership For Children. Most children access the program through WIC referrals, but interested parents can also ask their provider. Dental education services are also available.

Nutrition Services
Children who are eligible can participate in the WIC (Women, Infants, & Children) program. Nutritional counseling for diabetes, obesity, etc. is also provided. Education to parents and/or care givers is available.

Medicaid/Health Choice
North Carolina participates in the federal Child Health Insurance Program (CHIP) to provide health insurance to children who do not qualify for Medicaid or have any other insurance. Children who do not qualify for Medicaid are immediately considered for the Health Choice Program. The applications are the same as the Medicaid application and can be obtained at the Health Deparment. Completed applications are submitted to the Department of Social Services on the second floor of the Human Services Building. Call 697-5500 for more information.

Health Check Coordinator
The Health Check Coordinator promotes well-child care and immunizations. She tracks Medicaid-eligible children, birth to 21 years of age to ensure that they receive adequate preventive care. She provides information about preventive services and helps to overcome barriers to care. The Health Check Coordinator can be contacted at 694-6062.

Behavioral Health
The clinic has a clinical social worker who offers counseling services to health department patients to help with issues such as stress, depression, anxiety, and parenting. Services are also available in Spanish. Call for an appointment..
