Attention: Breastfeeding Moms
Henderson County Department of Public Health
Hendersonville, North Carolina

Vitamin D drops are available free of charge to infants and children who are only being breastfed or who are eating solid foods and only breastmilk. All

  • infants and children who are residents of North Carolina,
  • six weeks of age or older,
  • and are only getting breastmilk (no infant formula or Vitamin D fortified milk)

are eligible to receive Vitamin D drops from the Henderson County Department of Public Health WIC Program.

Vitamin D is essential for healthy bone growth. The breastmilk a baby receives also contains some Vitamin D, but the amount varies and is relatively low. Rickets is a disorder that weakens and softens the bones. There has been an increased incidence of rickets in North Carolina. It is usually seen in young children between the ages of 6 months and 24 months.

These Vitamin D drops are available to all exclusively breastfed children regardless of income.

WIC is an equal opportunity program. Persons who believe they have been discriminated against because of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability, should write:
