The Shot

Depo-Provera is an injection given once every 3 months. It contains the hormone progesterone. This method is very effective at preventing pregnancy, and is a good option for women who cannot remember to take a pill every day. A woman should have the shot given to her by a nurse once every 11-13 weeks. It does not prevent sexually transmitted infections.
