Henderson County Solid Waste Division is led by Natalie J. Berry, P.E.

Essential Departmental Functions:The Solid Waste Division provides the County with a transfer station for waste disposal, a drop-off site for recyclable materials, white goods (used appliances and metals), tires, and wood waste. The Department is responsible for waste reduction, recycling and disposing of solid waste in order to protect the public's health, safety and welfare.

3/23/2011: A Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event is scheduled for April 21, 2011 from 9am to 12pm behind the Stoney Mountain Activity Center. Pesticides, insecticides, household cleaners/chemicals, and liquid paint will be accepted. Liquid paint incurs a fee of $5 for a full liquid gallon.

12/15/2010: Christmas Tree Recycling

Date, time & location:
Saturday, January 8, 2011 at Jackson Park, parking lot of Field 6 (central area at ball fields). 
Trees can be dropped off between December 26 to January 8 (for City and County residents).

The City of Hendersonville will pick up trees curbside within the city limits until January 8th and transport the trees to Jackson Park.

Mulch is given away at no charge to anyone who wants it.

Sponsors are ECO, Henderson County and City of Hendersonville.

11/1/2010: America Recycles Day is November 15th. 45 lucky recyclers will win $25 gift certificates from Harris Teeter for using the Recycling Convenience Center at Stoney Mountain.

Household chemicals and liquids should not be disposed of in household trash.  Many household chemicals may be corrosive or flammable and could cause possible injury to garbage haulers.   Incidences of strong acids and bases in household trash have occurred resulting in medical emergencies.  Household chemicals should be stored until they can be properly disposed of at local household hazardous waste events. These events are held in Henderson County during the Spring and Summer months.

8/4/2010: The Henderson County Solid Waste Division will hold Hazardous Household Waste events on Thursday, August 19, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to noon and again on Thursday, September 16, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Stoney Mountain Transfer Station located at 802 Stoney Mountain Road in Hendersonville.

6/18/2010: Pesticide Disposal Day, July 20, 2010, 10am-2pm at Jackson Park, Shelter #2. Free of Charge. All products must be labeled. Please contact Ivy Olson or Marvin Owings at 828-697-4891 at the Cooperative Extension.

5/20/2010: Household Hazardous Waste Training Event. May 21st, 9am-12pm at Stoney Mountain. Residents may bring in pesticides, insecticides, paint, and thermostats. Paints will be collected for $5. Pesticides, Insecticides, and thermostats free of charge. Future events TBA monthly.

5/19/2010: Composting 101 at the Hendersonville Community Coop on May 20th at 10am. Diane Turner of the Cooperative Extension and Alexis Baker, Henderson County Environmental Programs Coordinator to be hosting.

5/10/2010: STONEY MOUNTAIN ROAD WILL BE CLOSED 5/11/2010 at 8am. THE STONEY MOUNTAIN TRANSFER CENTER AND RECYCLING CONVENINENCE CENTER MAY BE ACCESSED FROM HWY 191 (HAYWOOD RD) OR MOUNTAIN ROAD.

4/29/2010: NEW! Thermostats are collected at the gatehouse at the Stoney Mountain Transfer Station. Battery collection is located near the oil collection center at the Stoney Mountain Recycling Convenience Center.

3/23/2010: Earth Day's 40th Anniversary Environmental Stewardship Contest Finalist.

Congratulations to Stephanie Cope of Hendersonville Middle School and to all the contest finalists. Stephanie has won ten recycling bins for her school and will have her drawing on the back of the Henderson County Recycling Truck. During the Earth Day celebration at Blue Ridge Community College on April 24th, Stephanie's drawing will be officially unveiled, and she will be presented the Earth Day Environmental Stewardship Award. Thanks to all of the Henderson County middle school students who submitted drawings! Keep up the good work.

The Henderson County Sheriff's department will accept and safely dispose of your unused, unneeded, expired medications.

Deputies will be posted at 4 Locations: Ingles on Highland Lake Road, Ingles in Etowah, Ingles in Fletcher and Ingles 64 East/Howard Gap Road

12/19/2010: Yard Waste Amnesty Week

Due to recent winter storms, the Solid Waste Division is now accepting residential yard waste such as brush, tree limbs, and leaves free of charge from February 20th to February 27th at its Stoney Mountain Transfer Station.  This fee waiver applies only to homeowners and not commercial or contract services. Those bringing in yard waste must have a photo ID proving residency in Henderson County and must be weighed on the scales upon entrance and exit.  After February 27th,  yardwaste will resume its normal fee of $52/ ton.

1/4/2010: Middle School Graphics Contest Promoting Environmental Stewardship


This year, Henderson County is conducting its first annual
Environmental Stewardship Contest. This contest is open to all Henderson County Middle School
Students. The purpose of this contest is to inspire students to think about their role in protecting our
valuable natural resources in Henderson County and in our world. Teachers may also use this theme
to discuss environmental issues such as recycling, energy management, air quality, water quality, and
protection of the natural environment.

The winner of the contest will receive 10 recycling bins for his/her school and his/her art will be
displayed on the back of the Henderson County Recycling Truck. The winner of the contest will be
chosen on April 1, 2010 just in time to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22.
Submissions must be received by Henderson County no later than March 1, 2010 at 4:30pm.

Contest rules:
1. The graphic may be from any media or art style. However, all work must be original.
2. All artwork must follow the following criteria:
a. Clearly portrays an environmental theme.
b. Is an original work of art.
c. Is eye-catching and colorful.
d. Must have the student, school, and teacher displayed clearly on the back of the entry.
3. Entries must be produced by a Henderson County middle school student.
4. The contest is not open to children of Henderson County employees.
5. Submissions must be either scanned or emailed to: alexisbaker@hendersoncountync.org or
mailed to: (mailed entries should preferably be printed on 30% post-consumer paper content
or higher)

8/14/09- Henderson County will collect electronics at the Southern Energy and Environment Expo on August 21-22. Electronics, with the exception a $5 fee for televisions, will be accepted for free. An article was published in the Asheville Citizen-Times on Electronics Recycling , referencing the upcoming electronics collection event.

8/12/09- The Hendersonville Times-News has published articles on the Solid Waste Feasibility Study and the proposed changes to the landfill.

8/4/09- The Solid Waste Feasibility Study is now online.

7/1/09- The Board of Commissioners has approved a new fee schedule for solid waste effective August 1, 2009. All waste will be charged at a rate of $52 per ton with a $10 minimum fee for all loads across the scale.

Residents with small loads are encouraged to particpate in our recycling program. If you bring a quantity of recyclables equivalent to the waste delivered, you pay NO FEE at all. Also, you get to bypass the line at the scales. PLEASE RECYCLE! Contact Alexis Baker, Environmental Programs Coordinator at 828 694-6524 for more information.

Henderson County is participating in the Change the World National Campaign. By pledging to change a standard light bulb to a compact flourescent lightbulb or to use other energy saving measures, the County can win a $5,000 grant to improve energy efficiency in County facilities. 4/13/09-Earth Day is coming closer, and Henderson County residents can celebrate by bringing their old electronics to an electronics recycling collection event on Saturday April 25th from 10am to 2pm held at the Blue Ridge Community College campus behind the Bo Thomas Auditorium. This is not a Household Hazardous Waste collection event, and no HHW will be accepted; no televisions will be accepted at this time either due to space constraints. 4/3/09-Henderson County is now accepting used cooking oil for recycling collection at the Stoney Mountain Convenience Center. The cooking oil that is collected will be made into bio fuel by Asheville-based producer Blueridge Biofuels. Click here to read more.

3/24/09- Henderson County has rearranged the Stoney Mountain Recycling Center for greater user safety and convenience. Read more about it in the Times News.

3/9/09- Spring is in the air! Now is a great time to feed your garden and reduce your waste by composting. The County is selling compost bins for $55 each. 2/25/09- The annual Carolina Recycling Association's conference will be held in Spartanburg, South Carolina from March 24th through 27th. The general public, as well as recycling and solid waste professionals throughout the region are invited. Click here to read more about the CRA conference. 1/12/09-Henderson County residents recycled 4 million pounds during 2008. That's up over 500,000 pounds from 2007. Read the full story here.

12/22/08-Henderson County has expanded its recycling program to include the collection of oil filters and car batteries. Both can be taken to the Henderson County Recycling center at 806 Stoney Mountain Road. There is a 55 gallon drum for oil filters and a pallet to stack car batteries next to the used oil collection tank.
